Breaking Age-Related Stereotypes
Society often imposes stereotypes and misconceptions on what is considered age appropriate. That being said however, there is a growing movement that defies these limitations and emphasises the importance of embracing individuality at every age. This shift signifies a celebration of diversity and a departure from rigid perceptions of style based on age. The emphasis is no longer on adhering to conventional norms but on celebrating individualism, freedom of expression, and the empowerment that comes with it.
This ideal is personified by celebrities such as Diane Keaton, Helen Mirren, Iris Apfel and Lyn Slater, and emphasised by the many blogs aimed at older women, like this one. Yes, wearing combat boots over 60 is OK. So let’s move on to choosing the best pair for you.
And just in case you’re not convinced, here’s Diane Keaton rocking the combat boot look.
Choosing the Perfect Pair
When it comes to wearing combat boots over 60, comfort and support are crucial considerations. The right pair should not only make a bold fashion statement, but also provide the comfort and support needed for all-day wear. Let’s look at the key factors to consider when choosing your perfect pair.
Importance of Proper Fit
Comfort begins with proper fit. Ill-fitting boots can lead to discomfort, foot pain and all round misery. When trying on combat boots, make sure that there’s enough room for your toes to wiggle without feeling constricted. Additionally, pay attention to the width and ankle support to avoid any rubbing or chafing.
Arch Support and Cushioning
Combat boots designed with adequate arch support and cushioning can make a world of difference, especially for those of us in our 60s. Look for boots with contoured insoles that provide arch support. This can help distribute your body weight evenly and reduce strain on your feet. Ample cushioning in the footbed and around the ankle can also enhance overall comfort, making prolonged wear more enjoyable.
Material and Weight Considerations
Opt for boots crafted from high-quality, durable materials that offer both comfort and longevity. Leather is a popular choice for its durability and ability to conform to the shape of your feet over time. Moreover, consider the weight of the boots. Lightweight options are better as they reduce the strain on your feet and legs, especially during extended wear.
An Iconic Pair to Consider: the Classic Dr Martens 1460s
A timeless icon in the world of combat boots, the Dr. Martens 1460 continues to reign supreme for its exceptional comfort, durability, and timeless style. The trademark yellow stitching, cushioned soles, and smooth leather make them a go-to choice for women seeking a perfect blend of comfort and fashion-forward appeal. Whether walking around the city or tackling outdoor adventures, the Dr. Martens 1460 offers the ideal balance of comfort and support.
Now let’s get to the fun part! You’ve got your boots, now let’s style them.
How to style your combat boots
When it comes to styling, combat boots bring a versatile edge to any wardrobe. Their rugged yet stylish appeal allows for a seamless transition from daytime casual to dressy evening ensembles. Whether you’re running errands, meeting friends for lunch, or attending a special event, combat boots offer endless styling possibilities.
Some of the best looks I’ve seen come from juxtaposing the rugged aesthetic of the boots with ultrafeminine or more formal clothes. Let’s look at the possibilities:-
Combat Boots With a midi skirt
This look has a wonderful Edwardian retro feel about it. A crisp cotton shirt, tucked into a belted long full skirt, finished off with a pair of chunky black lace-up boots.
Perfect boots for this look would be Clarks Orinoco 2 Style in black leather. I own a pair of these boots and can really recommend them.
They come in leather and suede and in 7 colours.
What’s interesting in this look is the contrast between the soft buttery yellow of the layered and flowing clothes and the utilitarian grey hat and black boots.
The accessories add edge and interest, changing the look from an understood refined one to something a bit more sharp.
If you took away the black boots and replaced them with white or light tan boots, you would get a more subtle effect.
There’s something about a fluffy tulle skirt, an oversized jumper and a pair of combat boots that really works for me. I think it’s all of the different textures mixed together that does it: The soft everyday sweater, the fluffy impractical skirt and the tough serviceable boots.
And why not add a biker jacket for extra warmth?
Combat Boots With Trousers
This outfit from Marks and Spenser (M&S) is a great look for work. Cropped trousers really show off your boots and make a statement. These cords come in 4 colours and can be dressed up or down.
Here’s another great look from Me+Em, a high waisted wide leg cropped trouser suit.
Cargo Pants with combat boots. The obvious choice!
This pair are from Uniqlo and I have to admit that I have a pair in every one of the three colours they make (Green, Dark Grey and Off-White). I wear them all the time as they’re super comfy, washable and tumbledryable. (not a word, but you know what I mean!)
You can roll up any pair of trousers to get a similar effect. Here’s how it looks with a trouser suit.
And of course with jeans. This picture is of a Mom jean from M&S, but combat boots also look great with cuffed jeans, like this cigarette pair below, also from M&S.
Combat Boots With a Dress
This is a great example of an everyday dress being made really special by the addition of a great pair of chunky boots. These are not combat boots, they’re Chelsea boots, but hey, they have a similar look and feel.
This is a slightly more casual look from M&S. The sweater wrapped around the waist is a nice informal touch.
For me though, the stone coloured combat boots make this look. Personally, I’d add a nice pair of black thermal tights to keep me warm.
And to finish, some gorgeous dresses worn with combats photos to inspire you. Maybe the pink Molly Goddard number from the BBC’s Killing Eve is a bit over the top for you, but hopefully you can see how wearing combat boots with a dressy dress really works.
Maybe it’s just me, but as a lady of a certain age who always wears flat shoes, I love the idea that I can dress up to go out, but don’t have to cram my poor old feet into uncomfortable heels.
Conclusion
Styling combat boots for women over 60 is all about embracing comfort, confidence, and individual style. By pairing these versatile boots with flowy dresses, midi skirt, trousers, or denim, you can effortlessly elevate your look while staying true to your personal style. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different outfit combinations and accessories to showcase your unique flair. Embracing comfort and confidence doesn’t mean sacrificing style, and combat boots are the perfect way to merge all three for a fashion-forward and age-defying outfit. So go ahead, step into those combat boots, stride out and show the world the unique you!

Your blog has inspired me. As a woman over 60 I find myself constantly thinking “I’m too old for that”. My husband and I are travelling to Europe this year in September (from Australia) and you have made me completely rethink my wardrobe! Would love any tips you have for a travel capsule wardrobe for over 60’s! Maybe a future blog idea? Thanks for such a wonderful website.
Hi Kay
Thank you so much for your lovely comment. It’s really made my day!
I like your idea of a travel capsule wardrobe post and would love to hear any other ideas for posts you would like to see.

Hi Sian
Thanks for your reply! I really look forward to seeing a travel capsule wardrobe post. We will be travelling from mid September for a month to Europe so any suggestions will be gratefully received. I live in the north of Australia which is a tropical climate year round, with only two seasons (dry and monsoonal wet). Dressing for this climate can be challenging for over 60’s as stylish clothing is often too heavy and hot and cool, summery clothing too skimpy. Consequently my go-to clothing is usually linen. Not sure if that could be a future post as it may not be relevant to a lot of your followers. Once again, thanks for such a wonderful blog, it’s always a delight to see new posts waiting to be read in my inbox.

I’m 72. When I recently went to Chicago for a week, my black Doc Martens were the only footwear I took. I walked everywhere to see the sights, and 4 nights went to live theatre in my fancy dresses. They are the most versatile, comfortable footwear. Mind you, I do have other shoes that I wear when I’m home or at work, but these are the best! Now thinking about investing in a red pair.
Yes! Doc Martens are the classics. A red pair would be gorgeous and they do some wonderful floral ones that I have my eye on.
I just bought my first pair(s) and I am 72. I was suppose to choose between the two pair but now I can’t decide. But that’s not the only problem. I love them but don’t want to feel self conscious wearing them. They are comfortable, sturdy, and of course so very cool. Am I too old to pull this off?
You’re definitely not too old to pull this off! The important thing is that you feel comfortable wearing them, that they make you feel good and that they give you confidence.
